« Albufeira »

Over the past few decades Albufeira has become the most famous seaside resort in the Algarve with its international visitors and fashionable nightlife.

The centre of the town changes its character after the sunsets. A plentiful collection of bars, restaurants and clubs start to fill-up with the tourist until they over spill into the narrow streets. There is a good selection of good beaches run both to the east and west from the town. Praia de Balaia, Praia de Castelo, Praia de Falésia, Praia de Galé, de Olhos d’Agua, Praia de Maria Luisa, and Praia de São Rafael, being the main ones.

In Roman times Albufeira was called Baltum. There are Roman bridges in Paderne and Guia. Arabs occupied the town in the 8th century and renamed it Al- Buhera, which means, "Castle on the Sea".

There is a small museum of 15th and 17th century Ming ceramics and a Municipal art gallery that holds regular exhibitions during the season. A further addition to the town is a new Virtual Arqueológico Museum.

Fishermen still unload their boats and mend their nets at the Praia dos Barcos, but for the most part tourism has overtaken the town’s former role as a fishing harbour.
